Colonel’s Retreat Overview

First Impressions

Walking into Colonel’s Retreat, you immediately get the sense that this isn’t trying to be something it’s not. It’s a solid three-star property tucked away in Defence Colony, and honestly, that’s exactly what makes it work so well. The lobby has this understated charm — nothing flashy, but everything feels thoughtfully put together. You know what struck me most? How quiet it is once you step inside, which is pretty remarkable considering you’re right in the heart of New Delhi.

The Location Sweet Spot

Defence Colony is one of those neighborhoods that locals love but tourists often overlook, and that’s actually a good thing. You’re close enough to the main attractions without dealing with the chaos of Connaught Place or Karol Bagh. The market area is just a short walk away — perfect for grabbing authentic street food or picking up those last-minute souvenirs. I mean, couples seem to really get this location (they rate it 9.0), and I can see why. It feels residential and safe, especially in the evenings when you want to take a leisurely stroll.

Your Room and Comfort

The room I stayed in was larger than I expected — these older Delhi properties sometimes surprise you that way. Nothing fancy, but the AC worked perfectly (crucial in Delhi summers), and the bed was genuinely comfortable. What I appreciated most was the attention to cleanliness and the fact that everything actually worked. The bathroom was compact but well-maintained, and there’s something to be said for hot water that’s consistently hot. Small details, but they matter when you’re dealing with Delhi’s intensity all day.

Breakfast and Practical Perks

The breakfast spread here is honestly impressive for a place this size. They’ve got everything covered — continental options, full English breakfast, vegetarian and vegan choices, even gluten-free items. I was particularly happy about the “breakfast to go” option since some mornings you just want to grab something quick and head out early to beat the crowds at Red Fort or India Gate. And here’s something you’ll actually appreciate — free parking right on site. If you’re planning to rent a car or have someone picking you up, this is huge in a city where parking can be a nightmare.

Why Guests Love It

Look, Colonel’s Retreat isn’t going to wow you with marble lobbies or rooftop pools, but it delivers on the fundamentals really well. The staff genuinely seems to care about making your stay smooth, and there’s something refreshing about a place that focuses on doing the basics right rather than trying to be everything to everyone. Recent guests consistently rate the location highly (9.1), and after staying here, I get it. You’re positioned perfectly to explore both Old and New Delhi without feeling like you’re camping out in a tourist bubble. For the price point and the neighborhood, it’s exactly what a good three-star hotel should be.

  • Poupoune from Australia – 10 April 2025 (8/10)

It was more of a home stay style than a hotel chain
The room was very spacious cosy bed aircon kettle and amenities staff were very nice

What could be improved: Aircon not working in common areas tv in the room not smart tv and not working towels were a bit old

  • Jlofe from United Kingdom – 6 April 2025 (9/10)

Amazing place, super friendly staff, smashing food all at wonderfully reasonable prices.

  • Cathryn from Australia – 4 April 2025 (9/10)

Lovely property on a quiet street. The room was really nice with a lot of natural light, a comfy mattress and good water pressure. The rooftop is an added bonus, with afternoon tea every day in a pretty setting. All the staff were lovely and offered to get me medication from the pharmacy and would check in on how I was feeling. The WiFi didn’t seem to work on the rooftop, but do we really need to be chronically online on holiday? Had no problems accessing WiFi in the room and shared sitting areas.

  • Soma from India – 2 April 2025 (8/10)

The room was very clean, cozy, and thoughtfully designed and maintained, with all the amenities we needed inside the room for a comfortable stay. The rooftop dining area was a lovely surprise—peaceful and airy, and the food served was very homely. It was the perfect setting for a relaxed breakfast. We especially appreciated the attention to small details, like filtered water in glass bottles, sustainable practices, and the warm, personal touches throughout the property. The location is also convenient, with easy access to key parts of the city while still being peaceful and secure—particularly important as I was traveling with my daughter.

What could be improved: There are a few areas that could be improved to enhance guest comfort. The breakfast spread was fairly limited, with just a few continental options and some Indian dishes like slices of paratha and dosa, Idli. Additionally, since breakfast is served at the table rather than buffet-style, it felt a bit restrictive—you have to request and ask for each item individually, which can be slightly inconvenient even though the staff is very prompt and courteous in serving.
Also, the tea and coffee could be improved. Given how excellent tea is in many places across Delhi, a richer and more flavourful brew would certainly elevate the experience.

  • Christina from Canada – 1 April 2025 (8/10)

The room and property are very nice. The food is excellent and the staff took good care of me.

  • Vaninthorn from Thailand – 25 March 2025 (8/10)

The place had a very homey feel to it and the decor was beautiful. Clean stay with daily housekeeping and the staff are very nice – always ready to help. We asked to store our luggage on our last day, get small change for the cab rides and other small requests and the team were very happy to assist us. The breakfast on the rooftop is also nice and simple with some varieties. The setting is beautiful with lots of beautiful flowers to take in the morning with sunlight. Location is also great, in a guarded area and close to major markets. Overall, great stay and I would return.

    What could be improved: Nothing

What could be improved: Really liked it all.
